Market Overview - August 2009

For the latest news releases affecting exchange rates, please see our currency blog which is updated daily at http://currencyindex.blogspot.com.

The end of July saw a small rally for the Pound against major currencies such as the Euro and Dollar, after a month of trading in narrow ranges. The UK’s currency had been gaining value until June, but seemed to have run out of steam as question marks over the depth of the recession continue to weigh down expectations. For August, the usual monthly key data releases such as inflation, house prices and consumer confidence are likely to be keenly watched as indicators of economic recovery.

Elsewhere, both the Australian and New Zealand dollars continued to strengthen (become more expensive) as investors moved funds to two of the only developed economies which still have relatively high interest rates.

As markets are still very cautious in the current economic environment, be careful because optimism on exchange rates can be expensive. Discuss your requirements with Currency Index and adopt a sensible approach to your currency transactions.
